Venue internet
Your guests’ phones only need to reach the Jukoke computer. The computer needs the internet only for online songs and song search. Here are three ways to bring your own, so the night does not depend on the venue.
The idea: bring your own router
Put a router of your own between the venue and everything else. Guests join its WiFi, and the Jukoke computer plugs into it with a cable. That keeps the party on a network you control, and it works even where the venue has no WiFi, a weak signal, or a sign-in page. Give the router a real internet connection, not just a local network. Some phones disconnect from WiFi that has no internet and switch to mobile data, and then they cannot reach the party.
Use the cable for the Jukoke computer. WiFi is fine for phones, but the computer should not share it.
Setup A: a portable router with a SIM card
The simplest. Put a data SIM in the router, plug it in, and it works. This is the one we suggest if you host often.
- Needs a data plan for the SIM. Check the plan’s limits and any slowdown after a high-speed allowance.
- Check the signal inside the venue before the night. A spot near a window is often better.
Setup B: a travel router and your phone
A low-cost option. Your phone shares its mobile data with a small travel router over a USB cable. The cable also keeps the phone charged.
- Turn on USB tethering on the phone. Most travel routers support it, but check yours does, for your kind of phone.
- Your plan must allow tethering. Many plans give tethering a smaller high-speed allowance than the phone itself.
- Use the USB cable if you can. A phone’s WiFi hotspot also works, but it can switch itself off after a while, and it is less steady.
Setup C: a travel router that joins the venue’s WiFi
If the venue has good WiFi and will let you on, a travel router in repeater mode can join it and rebroadcast a network of your own. Treat this as a bonus, not the plan.
- A venue sign-in page can stop this from working. Try it in advance.
- You do not control the venue’s signal or how busy it gets.
Before the night
- Open any website on your phone while it is on your own network.
- In Jukoke, open Party → QR Code / Link and check the address is right for this network.
- Get songs ready ahead of time at home with Party → Prep, so they are already saved on the computer. Songs already saved use no data at the venue.
- Online songs and previews use data. A saved song is typically tens of megabytes, and a preview a few. If you use a data plan, test a full practice night and see how much it used.
